Just FYI, I was messing with a 140 and a 240 in the studio of a very, very famous producer here in London this weekend. As I ran some test tones through these I noticed that on both the right channels were always a little louder. The in-house engineer explained to me that when they were serviced (very well by someone with a name too) he saw that the transducers that pick-up the sound of the plate are placed in such a way that one is closer to the emitting/driving transducer. So those level differences are actually apparently all very normal. Thus for now I personally didn't install the gain patch, but instead in Pro Tools I am using the multi-mono TRIM plug-in as insert before Ebony to change the level of the left channel of what goes into the verb. I have not tested for any time arrival differences, but if any I would imagine these being well short.
On the other hand, we did some AB testing of the HW (different plate, same model) and Ebony and even if a bit different, Ebony was by no means any worse! In fact, it was ringing less and in some cases this was better as the sound was more natural, and more a part of the instrument, rather than something on top of it.
