Automap for iPhone / iPod touch – take instant remote control of your music making software

Novation's Automap has already revolutionised the way we control music production software now. Automap is set to do the same with the iPhone and iPod touch.

The power behind Novation's award-winning SL MkII, SL Compact and Nocturn MIDI controllers is now available for your iPhone / iPod touch, providing an instant and intelligent, wireless, palm-sized MIDI controller. Now you can use iPhone / iPod touch to control all of your music making software.

Whenever you want to control music software and the mouse is out of reach, Automap for iPhone / iPod touch delivers. And the possibilities are endless, give your artist remote control of reverb levels; a hand-held cross-fader for laptop DJ'ing; controlling multi-effects whilst tracking guitar; switching drum kits whilst you're sat at your V-drums.

The Automap for iPhone / iPod touch app will be available to buy from the Apple app store in July. Combined with Novation's free Automap 3 Standard software, or Automap 3 PRO, it provides two horizontal faders and eight buttons per page, displayed on a single iPhone / iPod touch screen. However, the number of pages and thus the number of controls is unlimited.

Automap lets you see at a glance how every control on your iPhone / iPod touch is assigned, both on the iPhone / iPod touch itself, and across your computer screen. Combining all this visual feedback with intelligent software browsing also helps you get to the right software fast! Control maps are automatically placed into categories depending on type (instrument, effects, mixer and so on) for quick and easy browsing and selection.

Although Automap automatically and intelligently maps to all major music making software, you will inevitably have your own unique way of working. Consequently, editing maps and re-assigning controls in Automap is extremely quick and easy. Simply click a parameter in learn mode, then touch a control on your iPhone / iPod touch to assign it. Double-clicking 'learn' allows you to 'Click-Touch-Assign' in quick succession.

Using your iPhone / iPod touch with Automap 3 PRO (available to buy from www.focusrite-estore.com) delivers some extremely powerful additional features.

Firstly, it harnesses the shortcut power of your QWERTY keyboard. It then allows you to assign almost any computer keyboard shortcut, and combinations thereof, to any of the controls on your iPhone / iPod touch. Editing maps is also improved, allowing you to simply drag parameters in the Automap Heads-up GUI from one control to another. Finally, with PRO you can use your iPhone / iPod touch alongside any other Automap compatible hardware controller and it's all perfectly integrated for seamless control.

With Automap for iPhone / iPod touch, Novation has placed the power of your music making software into the palm of your hand to use and abuse in ways we couldn't even imagine! Back to topHow does Automap work?
The system works by the iPhone / iPod touch and Novation hardware communicating with the Automap software (sometimes called the Automap Server), which is an application that is installed with the hardware and runs in the background on your computer, opening up automatically when your music software is loaded. This software then communicates with whatever it is you're trying to control, which is referred to as a client.

A client can be any automatable VST/AU/Pro Tools format plug-in, the mixer in a supported DAW or the MIDI client. The MIDI client is a part of the Automap software itself and allows CC numbers to be sent from the hardware controls (essential for iPhone / iPod Touch, which isn't a standalone MIDI device). Back to topControlling Plug-ins
Controlling plug-ins within Automap works by wrapping plug-ins to add Automap functionality. Opening up a wrapped plug-in results in it being given Automap focus by the Automap Universal software, causing plug-in parameters to be instantly mapped to the hardware controls with no individual setup required. This means that Automapping plug-ins works in any DAW*, without having to select anything in the DAW's MIDI preferences. Furthermore, every plug-in is given a Learn mode for you to create your own layout; simply move a control within the plug-in window and then one on the Novation hardware to map a parameter! Each Automap-wrapped plug-in is identical to the original plug-in, with the exception of a small border that features an Automap logo. This border allows you to show or change what plug-in is being Automapped, activate Learn/Clear modes, change control names (displayed on your iPhone/iPod touch) and type in control ranges and step values for encoders and buttons.

The plug-ins function as expected and behave normally within the sequencer, only now your iPhone /iPod touch can talk directly to the plug-in without having to route through the host software. With multiple wrapped plug-ins in a session, the active Automap logo (the 'A' in the bottom left corner of the image above) indicates the plug-in that the iPhone / iPod touch is currently controlling. Different plug-ins can be selected for control within the software or directly from your iPhone / iPod touch.

Automap has a transparent GUI that displays the parameter names and values of all assigned controls on your iPhone / iPod touch. This GUI also provides an ultra-fast system for browsing and selecting different plug-ins to control.
