Идея этого праздника принадлежит министру культуры Франции Жаку Лангу, предложившего в 1982 год праздновать день музыки. 21 июня - дата выбрана не случайно, это самый долгий день в году - летнее солнцестояния.
В этот день по всей Франции проходят многочисленные парады и концерты, во время которых исполняются музыкальные произведения абсолютно всех жанров, от классической музыки, до самых современных ее течений.
Главная цель праздника – это пропаганда музыки. Считается, что это мероприятие способно объединить разные группы населения, и еще поможет раскрыться молодым талантливым людям.
