With so many excellent virtual instrument plug-ins and applications available for Pro Tools® from the well-respected Digidesign Development Partner™ community, you may be wondering why Digidesign® got involved in virtual instrument development. In short, we at Digidesign have been focused on continual improvement of Pro Tools to make it the most powerful application for music creation and composition. As more and more music creation is happening “in the box” with virtual instruments, it became apparent that having a team within Digidesign dedicated to developing best-of-breed virtual instruments could offer tremendous help and insight in guiding this effort. This is precisely where the Advanced Instrument Research (A.I.R.) group comes in.
The benefits of having the A.I.R. team operate under the same umbrella stretch beyond simply adding another top-notch virtual instrument design group to the platform — though that’s definitely compelling in its own right. Strategically, working closely with the A.I.R. group allows us to leverage their expertise to generally improve how Pro Tools interoperates with virtual instruments — something that all third-party virtual instrument developers for Pro Tools can benefit from. At the same time, working closely with Digidesign affords the A.I.R. group unique advantages in developing new technologies that improve the way virtual instruments integrate with Pro Tools — both functionally and from a stability point of view.
