Anyone interested in the daily adventures of a struggling engineer working
at a retail store in order to (barely) pay his bills? Ok, here goes...
10am: Phone rings...
me: Hello, Pro Audio Store, can I help you?
customer: Yes I'm interested in recording music with my computer.
me: ok, do you have a computer already?
c: yes I do.
m: ok, what do you have.
c: oh, I'm not sure, I bought it a couple of years ago.
m: ok, we should probably find out what it is. You'll need a fast computer,
a good soundcard...
c: oh, I already have a Soundblaster.
m: umm, you'll need something a bit better than that to get professional
results.
c: ok, what do I need?
m: how many inputs do you think you'll need?
c: inputs? what do you mean?
m: well, how many simultaneous instruments will you need to record at once?
c: I want to make music with my computer.
m: ok, I understand that, but are you going to be recording full bands, or
just writing some stuff using MIDI by yourself.
c: I think I have a MIDI already.
m: ummm... ok.... do you know what software you'd like to use?
c: software?
m: yeah, like alsihad, illogic, q-bass etc
c: what do I need software for?
m: to record into.
c: how much does that cost?
m: anywhere from $150 to a few thousand dollars.
c: oh, that's expensive!
m: It can be...
c: I want to record using my computer!
m: hmmm... yessss.....
c: what's the best cheapest way to do this. See, I'm not a professional, but
I want to do some recording and have the tracks play back and mix and put
some fx on there and stuff. Is there software that will allow me to do that?
m: yes, any of the ones I just mentioned will do that.
c: oh that sounds expensive. Do you have anything for $200 that will give me
that professional Shania Twain sound?
m: uh.................
And so it continues. Day after day. Hour after hour. Bitter? I just met her!
