NAMM 2016: news, rumours, teasers and predictions
By The MusicRadar Team, 3 days agoGuitars
All the pre-show hype in one place
From 21-24 January, this place will be rocking (in a slightly corporate and businesslike sort of way).
NAMM 2016: The new year comedown can be difficult to deal with, but if you're a lover of new music-making gear, you can always rely on the annual Winter NAMM Show to shake you out of your post-festive funk.
Held every year in Anaheim, California, this trade-only event sees the world's biggest (and smallest) developers and manufacturers gathering together to show off their latest products for guitarists, hi-tech musicians, drummers, DJs and many others.
We'll have to wait until 21 January to find out exactly what these companies have in store for us, but as ever, our appetite will be whetted up until then with teasers, rumours, previews and - whoops - the odd leak or two.
To ensure that you don't miss out on anything that the pre-show hype machine churns out, we'll be updating this page with all the news (confirmed or otherwise) that comes in, as well as posting our own predictions.
So, if you want to know what will/might/possibly won't happen at NAMM 2016, keep it right here…
Tech
- It's rare for Korg to turn up at a trade show empty-handed, and we'd be very surprised if there wasn't something synth-related in its line-up. Will the company revive another of its products, or could a new instrument be on the cards?
- For the first time in ages, we're genuinely excited to see what Yamaha might be bringing to NAMM. The Reface range felt like a first step back into the world of synths (as opposed to workstations) so could the company be set to jump deeper into the market in 2016?
- With analogue and digital synths of various sizes and specs now filling its range, Roland seems happy to try just about anything these days. As such, second-guessing what the company will have in Anaheim is tricky. More Aira stuff perhaps… or maybe even yet another new product line?
- It's been well over a year since Behringer told us that it was planning to release a polyphonic analogue synth, so now would seem like an opportune time to put some flesh on the bones of that announcement.
- IK Multimedia is claiming that it has a "revolutionary mastering product" on the way. Make of that what you will.
- Expressive controllers could turn out to be a theme of 2016. Future Retro has said that it hopes to have its FR-512 touch keyboard ready for NAMM, and we wouldn't be surprised to see other 'next-gen keyboards' on display as well. In fact, Expressive E is teasing one known as the Touché.
- On the 30th anniversary of its release, Akai has posted a video of its AX73 being played, noting that "it might be a great 'board for us to bring back". Is this a pre-NAMM teaser? We shall see...
Guitars
- Audio Damage has been releasing killer plugins for years, and has recently been making moves in the world of Eurorack, too. At NAMM, however, we'll see the company move in another direction as it announces its first guitar pedals. One of these will definitely be a stereo chorus, and it appears that there could be others, too.
- Eventide are readying a new H9 algorithm "inspired by the 100th Anniversary of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity" – sounds intriguing, relatively…
- Big things are expected from Marshall, including a brand-new product line, plus a new configuration of a classic head.
- MXR will definitely be showing up with some new pedals – (X) marks the spot.
- It was an almighty show for Roland and Boss in 2015, with the SY-300 and DD-500 both doing the proverbial business for guitarists. We're hoping for more all-in-one pedals this year – a triple-footswitch'd reverb or modulation, perhaps?
- At the Fender stand, we'll be seeing more of the tidy-looking Bassbreaker amp series, plus some new high-end Fenders and affordable Gretsch models.
- Bass will be an increased focus for Orange this year, so we hear…
- PRS Guitars is bringing back its popular CE 24 bolt-on model, but there's bound to be more.
- A new Strymon pedal? Yes, indeed.
- We've heard rumblings of new product lines from Blackstar – valve or digital? We don't know for sure yet…
- ESP has already previewed the bulk of its new instruments, but we can expect the usual insane one-offs at the show itself.
- We'd wager another Moog Minifooger or two will crop up – phaser, please!
- Schecter's 2016 range is out and about.
- There will be at least one new DigiTech pedal – our money's on an expanded Trio.
- Ibanez has already spilled the beans on most of its line-up, but who knows what could crop up at the show…
- As well as the BD1 compact head, there will definitely be another new amp from Victory.
- Something crazy this way comes from Neunaber.
- Yamaha will be showcasing its new Revstar range, but will it have more to offer? We sure hope so…
- With Traditional and High Performance options on all models, Gibson is promising its "best year ever".
- Laney has a whole new product line in store, and rumour has it the price will be nice…
- Martin's high-end products have already been unveiled, and more affordable guitars will be announced next week, so we hear.
- There will definitely be a new TC Electronic pedal – what it is, we couldn't possibly say…
- Its Lester rotating speaker pedals already have our heads in a spin, but Electro-Harmonix is bound to have a handful of new eye-opening stompboxes on display.
- Knaggs and Steve Stevens have collaborated on a new signature model, the SSC, which is being launched by Stevens himself on the Saturday.
- The UK's own ThorpyFX will be showcasing The Peacekeeper low-gain overdrive.
- As well as the St Vincent signature model, Ernie Ball will have the new Modern Classic StingRay Guitar and Cutlass at the show and, we'd wager, yet another limited-edition John Petrucci model.
- North Carolina's Alexander Pedals are cooking up something special.
